Large Silver Hoop Earrings with Amethyst Discs; Circa 1950
Bold and unusual silver earrings of large circles within which are cut out circles. They are topped with amethysts, the size of which looks as though they are from the cut out circle. The setting and type of amethyst as well as the overall design of the earring are reminiscent of the work of William Spratling. The earrings are certainly artist made but not signed other than sterling. The circles measure 1 3/8" in diameter. The earrings are 1 3/4" in length including the amethyst. Backs are hinged... Click for details
Silver and Onyx Thumbprint Bracelet
This Thumbprint bracelet may be by silver master Antonio Pineda. It is a variation of his traditional all silver Thumb bprint bracelet. I have not seen one like this in which the silver links alternate with onyx. The ambiguity has to do with the mark. The circular mark under the clasp looks as though it is one that often accompanies Antonio's crown but I cannot say with 100% certainty. The tall push clasp with a wide circle is certainly one used by Antonio. Regardless of whether it is by... Click for details
Nine Patch Crib Quilt: Circa 1880; Pennsylvania
This classic Nine Patch quilt is nicely scaled and well quilted. There is a flower in each of the white blocks and a feather running throughout the border. It is freshly laundered. The border fabric is a more ivory shade of white than the interior. The quilt is in outstanding condition. Measurements are 40" x 52". Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880.
Spool Doll Bed with Linens; Dated 1905
This spool doll bed is charming in itself but even more so with the inclusion of its original linens. It has a mattress; quilt and pillow all done in beautiful 1870's fabrics. The bed measures 11 1/4" long; 7" wide and 9" to the top of the headboard. On the bottom is written that it was made in 1905.
Stag and Hounds Folk Art Quilt: Circa 1870; Pennsylvania
This extraordinary pictorial quilt depicts images that are both fierce and friendly. On the bottom are hounds chasing stags while on the top is a tree of life surrounded by birds, one of which may be a dove. It's a shame not to be able to speak with the quiltmaker to learn more of her intent but perhaps it is a metaphor for both the danger and kindness of life. Or am I reading too much into it? The quilt is from Pennsylvania; circa 1870's. Measurements are 77" x 78". It is in very good... Click for details
Chinese Coins Quilt: Circa 1880; Pennsylvania
This strippy quilt is a wonderful take off on Chinese Coins. The strips are mostly rectangular but have a lot of variety adding squares, triangles and irregular shapes. The quilt is made of a fabulous variety of fabrics from the third quarter of the 19th century. The background fabric is a small paisley print and the reverse is a print with hops. It is in unwashed, pristine condition. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880. Measurements are 68" x 84".
Old Italian Block Quilt: Circa 1860
The name of this quilt pattern, Old Italian Block, is a mystery to me but it seems to be well established. This example is done with a glorious combination of stunning fabrics. All are in unwashed, pristine condition. The outer border is a highly glazed chintz. Oddly, the back is a cotton muslin. One would have expected a "dressier" choice given the front but perhaps the maker indulged all she could with the front of the quilt. It is quilted throughout with blocks of diamonds. Measurements are... Click for details
Emilia Castillo Wood and Silver Box
This unusual wood and silver box by Emilia Castillo is one of her early pieces, done when she signed her work with both Mimi and Los Castillo. It measures 8 1/2" wide x 6 1/2" deep and 2 1/8" tall including the bracket feet. A bird on a branch surrounded by heart shaped leaves is painted in pure silver on ceramic. The box is richly colored ebony. It is in excellent condition; made circa 1990.
Los Castillo Mixed Metals Fish Pin: Circa 1950
This mixed metals (aka metales casados or married metals) fish brooch is done with the technique made famous by Los Castillo. It measures 2 1/8" from head to tail and 2 3/8" from the top to bottom of the fins. Hallmark dates from 1948 - 1960. Very good condition.
Grapes Applique Quilt with Swag and Tassel Border
This applique quilt is light, airy and graceful. The body is quilted with a crosshatch pattern with half wreaths along the border and full wreaths in the corners. The leaves look like grape leaves which is why I think the circles are not berries but that is open to interpretation. It has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1860. Measurements are 78" x 80".
