Carpenter's Square Quilt; Pennsylvania; Circa 1880's

q1010

Very rarely does one see a single Carpenter's Square. More often, there are four or five blocks on a quilt. This unusual example has especially fine quilting with a wreath in each of the five corners of the central diamond. The inner border is quilted with a feather and small waffle pattern  throughout the rest of the background. The design is terrifically three dimensional. The quilt is in excellent, probably unwashed condition. Measurements are 76" square. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880's
