This exceptional quilt has so many things going on that it is difficult to categorize. Overall, the pattern is Robbing Peter to Pay Paul, but it is so embellished with applique and embroidery that the pieced pattern becomes somewhat secondary. Each of the circles has a Crazy pieced center within which is an appliqued block with a recurring theme of birds, houses, mittens, hearts and flowers. If only this quilt could talk! It is really a shame that the history of this unique piece has been lost. As an art object, though, it more than stands on its own. Sewn to the back is a numbered label indicating it was either in a museum collection and/or exhibition but the quilt has come to me without that information. It is made of fine wools; in pristine condition. Measurements are 76" x 78"; circa 1890.
