New York Beauty Quilt: Circa 1930; Pennsylvania
New York Beauty Quilt: Circa 1930; Pennsylvania   $2,200

This is a particularly fine example of the desirable New York Beauty pattern. The colors really seem to give off the glow of sunshine. It is well quilted with overlapping circles that are a terrific complement to the round pieced pattern. The New York Beauty pattern was named by Mountain Mist in 1930 when they published it with recommendations for this particular color combination and quilting patterns. Variations of the pattern had been known prior to 1930 but not with this name. It is in... Click for details

Pot of Flowers Painted Mat: Circa 1870; New England
Pot of Flowers Painted Mat: Circa 1870; New England   $675

This painted pot of flowers was probably intended as a decorative table mat. It measures 9 1/4" long x 8 5/8" wide and is professionally mounted on a stretcher that is 11 1/4" x 12". It is signed on the bottom Irena Foater who was probably the proud maker but might also have been the recipient. There is a small right angle tear in the central flower that shows in the thumbnail. There are no other condition issues. Based largely upon the plaid fabric used for the binding, I date this to about... Click for details

Swirling Pinwheels Quilt: Circa 1880
Swirling Pinwheels Quilt: Circa 1880   $2,975

This is one of the most dramatic examples of a Swirling Pinwheel (aka Rising Sun or Wheel of Life) quilt that I have seen. The use of solid red and green punctuated by orange centers gives it real drama. The rows of diamonds around the Pinwheels add to the pulsating quality. LeMoyne Stars are another fine element. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. There are some slight irregularities in the green which is probably a home dyed fabric and somewhat fugitive. It is quilted with... Click for details
