This unique Rooster quilt is truly something to crow about. It is made entirely of 1 inch squares. The background is cotton; the rooster's body is primarily velvet with some wool. In addition to being quilted, the rooster's body is also tied which I believe is meant to give the effect of feathers. The forty five star flag dates the quilt to the time period between 1896 and 1908. The light squares toward the bottom look like letters and possibly a number but I am not clearly able to decipher them... Click for details

This exceptional quilt has so many things going on that it is difficult to categorize. Overall, the pattern is Robbing Peter to Pay Paul, but it is so embellished with applique and embroidery that the pieced pattern becomes somewhat secondary. Each of the circles has a Crazy pieced center within which is an appliqued block with a recurring theme of birds, houses, mittens, hearts and flowers. If only this quilt could talk! It is really a shame that the history of this unique piece has been lost. ... Click for details

Deep forest green and wine red make for a richly toned Sawtooth Diamond quilt. Made with the extremely fine wools for which the Lancaster County Amish are well known. Very well quilted with concentric stars in the center and classic feathered border. Excellent condition. Colors are considerably lighter than on my monitor. Measures 79" square; circa 1920.
