LeMoyne Stars Quilt with Trapunto: Ca. 1830; Pa.   $7,000

This LeMoyne Stars Quilt is combined with outstanding trapunto quilting. Two different pinwheel type stuffed work patterns alternate with the pieced stars. Inside the chintz border is a continuous trapunto feather. The soft color palette is unusual for an early 19th century quilt and combines beautifully with the elegance of the needlework. Measures 85" square; Pennsylvania origin. Excellent condition.

Triangles Quilt with Printed Panel: Ca. 1870; Mass.
Triangles Quilt with Printed Panel: Ca. 1870; Mass.   $1,085

Thousand Pyramids Quilt with a most unusual center of a printed panel depicting an elegant equestrienne with her hound. It is unusual for a highly pieced quilt to have a central panel. In this case, the elegance of the subject compared with the "country" aspect of the quilt makes for an even more unlikely, though successful, pairing. It is knotted, not quilted. Very good condition. Measures 65" x 87". From the Chadwick Family of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.

Birds in the Air Quilt: Circa 1880   $4,600

This extraordinary Birds in the Air Quilt has the tiniest pieces imaginable. Each triangle is 5/8" to a side. Written on the back is 25,000 for the number of pieces in the quilt. It is in excellent condition and measures 66" x 82".

Broken Dishes Doll Quilt: Circa 1890; Pennsylvania
Broken Dishes Doll Quilt: Circa 1890; Pennsylvania   $385

This triangles pattern doll quilt can be seen as a number of patterns. The square blocks divided into two triangles are put together so as to look like an Hourglass: Pinwheel or Broken Dishes. It is nicely quilted in double rows; in excellent condition. Measurements are 14 1/2" x 22". Pennsylvania origin; circa 1890. The color is more toward marigold than shows on my monitor.

Mennonite Log Cabin Quilt: Ca. 1890: Pa.
Mennonite Log Cabin Quilt: Ca. 1890: Pa.   $975

This Straight Furrows Log Cabin Quilt displays the strong graphics for which Mennonite quilts are known. The piano key border creates a wonderful frame continuing the diagonal theme. It is from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; made of wools; circa 1890. It measures 72" square; excellent condition.

One Patch Doll Quilt: Virginia; Circa 1890   $215

This charming One Patch Doll Quilt was either the practice piece of a child or the work of a mother whose good intentions exceeded her skill. I believe it was meant to be a One Patch with all equal squares. Overall, it does "read" like a checkerboard pattern but in fact, some of the blue striped blocks are elongated rectangles (one in a different direction than the others) and some of the red blocks are narrowed. It is hand quilted in brown thread. Measures 16 1/2" square. There is a hole in one... Click for details

Windmill Blades Log Cabin Quilt: Circa 1890

The dark centers are made of a combination of blue and brown fabrics giving added richness to this vibrant pattern. The front is almost all wool with velvet centers to each block. The yellow fabric and backing are cotton. Excellent condition; circa 1890. Measures 72" x 86".

Reversible Quilt- One Patch and Wild Geese; Circa 1880   $635

This unusual quilt is intended to be completely reversible. One side is a One Patch and the reverse is Wild Geese(aka Birds in the Air). While the quilt was made in the late 19th century, the Wild Geese incorporates some fabrics from the mid century. It is especially interesting to find elegant glazed chintz in three of the blocks of this otherwise country quilt. Both sides are in excellent condition; there is a small amount of color bleed on one of the glazed chintz blocks (visible in thumbnail... Click for details
