Strippy Quilt with Carpenter's Wheel: Circa 1880   $1,975

It is difficult to characterize this unique quilt. The Carpenter's Wheel center is surrounded by Flying Geese; King's Crown and Rolling Stone corner blocks. I'm not sure whether this is enough to characterize it as a strippy sampler quilt. The quilt was found in eastern Pennsylvania. It is imaginative and well made. It is in pristine, unwashed condition. Measurements are 68" x 76"; circa 1880.

Sampler Quilt: Signed and Dated 1892
Sampler Quilt: Signed and Dated 1892   $3,250

This folky Sampler Quilt has a great combination of traditional and original blocks. Nothing could be more traditional than the center Schoolhouse done with nicely inked detail. Below it is a Bear's Paw signed "Fannie J. Gould March 24, 1892". While the top was certainly made in the 19th century, the backing is later. It seems to be from the 1950's. The quilt is in excellent condition. Measurements are 76" x 78"; New England origin.

Floral Album Quilt: Circa 1860   $6,500

This wonderful floral album quilt is a combination of traditional and original appliqued blocks. Many of the original ones are done with reverse applique and look very much like the scherenschnitte paper cutouts popular with Pennsylvania Germans. Each of the four corners has a variation of a wreath pattern giving cohesion to the composition. The swag and tassel border beautifully frames the light and graceful applique blocks. Unlike many album quilts, the components of this are equal in weight... Click for details

Sawtooth Diamond Quilt: Circa 1920; Pennsylvania
Sawtooth Diamond Quilt: Circa 1920; Pennsylvania   $1,085

While this Sawtooth Diamond quilt may "read" pink on some monitors, it is actually a red chambray, that is red with white threads running through it. The unusual border adds a wonderful new dimension to this traditional pattern. It is in mint, unwashed condition and well quilted with a variety of patterns. The border may have been completed at a later date as it is a newer fabric but I see no reason for it to be a replacement as the quilt shows absolutely no signs of wear. Made circa 1920;... Barnraising Log Cabin Quilt with Herringbone Border: Ca. 1880   $2,450

This bold barn raising log cabin quilt beautifully combines patterned wool fabrics to create added interest to the eye. The use of light fabrics in the center diamond draws your eye immediately to this focal point while the many additional prints lead you throughout the entire pattern. The four triangles of color within the red frame are particularly well placed. Upon close examination, one sees that the border is actually a herringbone pattern combining solid blacks with printed fabrics.... Click for details

This classic Nine Patch quilt is nicely scaled and well quilted. There is a flower in each of the white blocks and a feather running throughout the border. It is freshly laundered. The border fabric is a more ivory shade of white than the interior. The quilt is in outstanding condition. Measurements are 40" x 52". Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880.

Spool Doll Bed with Linens; Dated 1905
Spool Doll Bed with Linens; Dated 1905   $695

This spool doll bed is charming in itself but even more so with the inclusion of its original linens. It has a mattress; quilt and pillow all done in beautiful 1870's fabrics. The bed measures 11 1/4" long; 7" wide and 9" to the top of the headboard. On the bottom is written that it was made in 1905.

Stag and Hounds Folk Art Quilt: Circa 1870; Pennsylvania   $9,600

This extraordinary pictorial quilt depicts images that are both fierce and friendly. On the bottom are hounds chasing stags while on the top is a tree of life surrounded by birds, one of which may be a dove. It's a shame not to be able to speak with the quiltmaker to learn more of her intent but perhaps it is a metaphor for both the danger and kindness of life. Or am I reading too much into it? The quilt is from Pennsylvania; circa 1870's. Measurements are 77" x 78". It is in very good... Click for details
