Shoo Fly Quilt: Circa 1880's   $695

This quilt most closely known as Shoo Fly (aka Alamanizer) is an unusual combination of elegant and country. The basic quilting; medium thick batting and plaid ground give it a very country feel. At the same time, there is a blue glazed cotton used throughout that is most often seen in far "dressier" pieces. The maker evidently had an eye for detail as in the lower right block, she pieced the same blue striped fabric in four different designs. The quilt measures 82" x 88". Found in Pennsylvania... This exuberant Pots of Flowers Quilt is finely quilted and appliqued. It is dated 1876 in quilting with initials EG. Princess Feather Quilt with Stuffed Applique: Circa 1860; Pennsylvania
Princess Feather Quilt with Stuffed Applique: Circa 1860; Pennsylvania   $2,985

This Princess Feather (aka Prince's Feather) quilt has two particularly unusual features. The central motif as well as the centers of the feathers are all stuffed applique. Four hearts surround the very center motif. Yellow within the stuffed work appliques really makes them pop. The other especially distinctive feature is that the feathers terminate in unusual pointed shapes. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. It is nicely quilted with a variety of patterns. Pennsylvania origin;... Click for details

Mariner's Compass Quilt: Circa 1870; Pennsylvania   $1,400

This finely made Mariner's Compass quilt is dense in both piecing and use of patterned fabrics. The fabric of printed circles of the background is an imaginative choice to mirror the circular compasses. The points of the compasses and sawtooth triangles are crisp and well defined. The quilt is in unwashed condition with one condition apology. There were some cracks in one side of the border fabric. It has been covered with invisible netting sewn over that end of the entire quilt. The netting... Click for details

Bowmansville Postage Stamp Quilt: Circa 1890; Pennsylvania
Bowmansville Postage Stamp Quilt: Circa 1890; Pennsylvania   $2,200

Bowmansville, a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is known for their quilts that are most often Star patterns made of squares. To my knowledge, this variation is unique. The complex and bold overall pattern is made of 1 1/2 inch squares of printed fabrics. The quilt measures 70" square. It is in excellent condition; made circa 1890.

Compass Star Quilt: Circa 1880   $1,275

This Compass Stars quilt is unusual both for the pattern and the fact that the indigo is used as the ground. More often, one would find a navy pattern on a white ground. Four Patch corner blocks show a nice attention to detail. It is very well quilted and in excellent condition. Measurements are 76 inches square; made circa 1880.

Barnraising Log Cabin Quilt: Circa 1880; Pennsylvania
Barnraising Log Cabin Quilt: Circa 1880; Pennsylvania   $1,675

This is an extremely finely crafted example of one of America's most classic quilt patterns - Barnraising Log Cabin. It is as crisp as the day it was made in the 1880's. It has a wonderful and unusual border. Rather than the more traditional piano key in which all of the strips face the same direction, this divides in the middle of each side to create a V in the center. It is made of a well placed combination of solid and printed fabrics. Measurements are 82" square. Brownstown, Pennsylvania... Click for details

Alphabet Quilt: Circa 1890; Pennsylvania
Alphabet Quilt: Circa 1890; Pennsylvania   $4,400

Alphabet quilts are rare and in this eye popping color scheme, even more so. A white pattern on a colored ground is the reverse of what one would usually find in any quilt pattern. The stars used for corner blocks add additional "pop". The quilt measures 68" x 80". It is quilted with concentric circles over each letter and straight lines between. Excellent condition. Franklin County, Pennsylvania origin.
