Charming Lancaster County Amish rag dolls that have all been well played with and loved.
Left - chambray dress with part of one sleeve ripped off. Black stockings and bloomers. 15 1/2" tall; circa 1930.
Middle - made with no arms probably by a very busy mother. Measures 21" tall; circa 1930.
Right - feedsack bloomers. Apron may have been a later addition as everything about the doll seems to be circa 1930 - 40 but the apron is a blended fabric that may be from the 60's. Measures ...click for details
Striking version of a Mennonite Roman Stripe Quilt with colors typical of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania where it was made. Background color is a milk chocolate brown, a bit lighter than on my monitor. Pristine, unwashed condition. Nicely quilted. A note on the back says it was made by Emma Royer Zug. Circa 1880; measures 84" x 86".
What might otherwise have been a somber Thousand Pyramids quilt is enlivened by the printed paisley triangles within each block. Made of lightweight wools that are in excellent condition. Some nicks in the binding but the body of the quilt has none. Measures 70" x 82". Quilting in the off blocks repeats the paisley triangles. Pennsylvania Mennonite; circa 1880.
This might be the best version known of the traditional Trip Around the World quilt pattern. The dazzling rainbow colors are wonderful in the quilt and perfect in creating the Joseph's Coat border. Border consists of 7 stripes; the dark blues may not all show separately on your monitor. Excellent condition; probably never washed. Nicely quilted with initials "FG" embroidered in the center. Measures 72" x 74 ". Lancaster County, Pennsylvania origin; circa 1890.
Vibrant and dramatic Mennonite Sawtooth Diamond quilt with applique. Initials SR are reverse appliqued in the center. Each corner is actually 1/4 of the central appliqued pattern. Nicely quilted with beautiful feathering patterns in the dark green border and diamond. Superb, unwashed condition. Lebanon County, Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880. Measures 84" square.
Amish Bricks Quilt embellished with floral embroidery. This type of embroidery is usually done by the Amish on pillows or seat cushions; I have not seen it on a quilt. Made of wools with cotton binding and backing; circa 1930. Inner frame cleverly relates to the primary bricks pattern. Mid-west origin, probably Indiana as the feather quilting pattern in the border is most often from that area. Excellent condition; measures 67" x 72".Outer border is more of a gray color than shows on my ...click for details
Striking Mennonite Joseph's Coat Quilt with an unusual multiple picture frame border. Very well quilted with overlapping circles. Oxidation to the green is consistent throughout the quilt. Darker rectangle in the brown strip on left hand side is not a repair; it is an original piece of a slightly darker tone. Remarkable that a pattern so like the Washington Colorist school of painting of the 1960's was made nearly 100 years earlier. Measures 88" square. Pennsylvania Mennonite origin ...click for details
Classic Lancaster County Amish Sunshine and Shadow quilt. Beautiful colors and shading. Traditional feathered quilting patterns in border. Done primarily in synthetic fabrics with some wools. Several tiny holes in the green, barely larger than a pencil point. Measures 84" square; circa 1930.
Wonderful combination of crazy blocks with log cabin type blocks to make an unusual composition with lots of positive/negative movement. Pristine condition wools with cotton backing. Tied on the back. Measures 68" x 73". Pennsylvania origin; circa 1890.
Pristine, unwashed Amish London Roads quilt; probably from Ohio. Multi colors set on a deep blue background. Quilted in inner light blue border are the initials ALM. Also quilted was the the date Feb. 24, 1922; someone pulled out the stitches but the date is still visible. Very well quilted; all cotton. Measures 70" x 72".
Lancaster County Amish Nine Patch Crib Quilt that is among the rarest of the rare. The Lancaster Amish made few crib quilts; hardly any have survived the hard use often seen in families frequently with a dozen children.
This fine example dates to about 1910. It is made of the fine wools typically seen in early Lancaster Amish quilts; the backing is a fine cotton. Very good condition; a smudge is visible on one of the Nine Patch blocks and slight wear. Well quilted with stars in the off blocks a ...click for details
This Amish Zig Zag quilt seems to be a unique interpretation. Both the construction and effect it creates are original. Strips of fabric were laid down on in a zig zag pattern. Straight lines were machine quilted, holding down the narrow strips of printed fabrics. The continuous turnings of the strips creates an effect somewhat like ric rac, but in fact it is not.
The structure of the quilt with a center frame on a black ground and multiple borders is traditionally Amish. From that point, nothi ...click for details
Most unusual to find a pair of Amish crocheted rugs. Done in the same color tones seen in their rag carpets. Made in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; circa 1930. Cotton; excellent condition. Larger measures 26 1/2" x 42" smaller is 23" x 38 1/2".
Lancaster County Amish Barnraising Log Cabin quilt that is unusual in: pattern; size and color palette.
Rarely did the Lancaster County Amish do log cabin patterns. Interestingly, though the actual pattern is quite different, the overall graphic is very similar to their iconic Diamond in a Square
pattern.
Excellent condition; floral quilting in border. Wool fabrics: teal and khaki colors are out of the ordinary for the Lancaster Amish. What appears to be gray on my monitor is actually a soft ...click for details
