Finely woven Navaho pictorial rug that is simultaneously detailed and streamlined. Subtle color change shows a corral fence in the distance. Mesas are wonderfully abstracted into geometric forms. Rich, warm colors with punchy red flowers. Measures 32 1/2" wide and 34" tall. Circa 1930; excellent condition.
Hooked rug with an utterly charming image of a huge hound. Soft colors of the dog are outlined in black. Wonderful huge red nose and piercing green eyes. Professionally mounted on a stretcher that follows the slightly octagonal shape of the rug. Excellent condition; professionally cleaned. Stretcher measures 33 1/2" x 43". Virginia origin; circa 1930.
Unusual Nine Patch Hooked Rug that is more like a quilt pattern than that of a rug. Made of fairly heavy wools and hooked (or shirred?)in an unusual way that makes the texture look like brain matter. Cleverly composed so that the rust colored squares both outline the Nine Patches and are repeated to form corner blocks. Rich colors; pristine condition. Measures 26 1/2" x 65". Circa 1930.
This is not the usual Floral Wreath Hooked Rug. The extraordinary concentric striated frames provide an entirely new dimension. In the center, it has a subtly op art effect. Throughout, it adds tremendous dimensionality to the background. The composition of the wreath is also out of the ordinary in that it includes pineapples, grapes and pears in addition to flowers. Excellent condition. Wool; measures 54" x 55". Circa 1930.
Imaginative pattern of Diamonds, Squares and Circles that appear to be floating on a dark ground. Excellent condition. Made of cotton, wool and silk. Measures 20 1/2" x 34"; Pennsylvania origin. Circa 1930.
Imaginative geometric pattern hooked rug that effectively gives the impression of X's superimposed on concentric rectangles. Wool and cotton. Irregularities in the color of the grid are just that - they are not dirt. Very three dimensional impact. Measures 21 1/2" x 38"; circa 1930. From the Mennonite Frey family in Ontarion, Canada.
Incredibly realistic Hooked Rug in the shape of a Cat, seriously guarding her ball. Mounted on board; measures 30" wide and 23" to tip of ears. Repairs to two areas of the green base do not detract from the droll image. Circa 1940; Pennsylvania origin.
Mary Had a Little Lamb charmingly depicted in a hooked rug. Mary shown in profile like the Sunbonnet Sue of quilts. Interesting that Mary's lamb is sheared; the legs are a fuzzier wool than the body.
Pristine condition; measures 16" x 23". Pennsylvania origin.
Terrific colors, pattern and condition make this rug a real stand-out. Bands of color look like a Joseph's Coat quilt. Pristine condition. All wool; measures 25 1/2" x 35 1/2". Circa 1940.
